Talk Therapy

Your current situation is not your final destination.

Therapy, also called psychotherapy or counseling, is the process of meeting with a mental health professional to resolve problematic behaviors, beliefs, feelings, relationship issues, and/or somatic responses (sensations in the body).

The Problem

The bottom line is, being human is not easy at all. It is normal to feel confused, anxious, sad or lost. Challenging relationships, troubling thoughts, and feeling misunderstood are part of the deal. Some of the issues we all face:

  • Anxiety: This one can be hell. Anxiety symptoms can have a grip on someone and never seem let go.

  • Dealing with loss, relationships, and grief can be overwhelming and confusing. Add in some past trauma? Life sometimes fucking sucks. It's ok to not be ok.

  • Sadness, feeling lost, and depression: It feels like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. It seems as if nobody gets you.

  • Adjustment issues: Expats and TCK's living in a foreign country have a unique set of challenges. The wonderfully crazy chaos of Vietnam can add another layer to these difficulties.

The Action

Counseling can help you handle emotions from problems (stressors), even if they aren't dramatically life-altering or traumatic. Therapy is well-known for its problem-solving techniques, including tools for overcoming anxiety, depression and relationship challenges. Here's how:

  • Anxiety treatment teaches you how to relate differently to anxiety, so it will have less of an impact on you and becomes much more manageable. Anxiety isn't your fault, but you can choose to change it.

  • Learning how to turn toward your pain with acceptance (instead of avoidance) will actually help you work through it.

  • Begin to notice unhealthy thinking patterns and shift towards healthier mind habits. With Cognitve Therapy, you don't need to believe every thought you have.

  • Gain coping skills and insights that lead to making choices aligned with your values.

The Result!

It's been said: 'The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master.'  This might sound abstract, but learning how to work with your thoughts makes a HUGE difference in how you feel. This is the essence of the evidence based approach we call Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).

  • Counseling for your anxiety provides new tools and skills, allowing you to handle your anxiety, instead of letting it handle you.

  • Know how to cultivate compassion, forgiveness, and wisdom to help get relief from pain and confusion.

  • Getting counseling for depression will lead to knowing how to relate to thoughts differently, which results in new choices/behaviors. The outcome is feeling better! This will now be a major tool in your toolbelt.

  • Responding mindfully to the wild ride that is your life promotes ease, flexibility, and inner calm. Did you know you could be at ease with dis-ease?
